Papers include a typescript transcription (1900) of a letter (1790) from Gilbert Johnston (or Johnstone) to his daughter-in-law Susanna Johnstone concerning his family history. The transcript includes annotations by Huger W. Johnstone, owner of the original letter. Two letters (1900 Aug. 31 and Sept. 13) from Bartlett S. Johnston in Baltimore, Md. to Col. Edward McCrady in Charleston, S.C. concern Gilbert Johnston (Johnstone), the Johnstone (or Johnston) family, and family members in South Carolina.

Charleston, South Carolina attorney, civic leader, and vestryman of St. Philips (Episcopal) Church. Born in 1802, McCrady was raised under the care of his grandfather William Johnson and was sent to Yale College at the age of fifteen, graduating in 1820. McCrady served as the U.S. District Attorney in South Carolina from 1839 to 1850, and as a state legislator. In 1829 he married Louisa Rebecca Lane. Edward McCrady died in 1892.
